Able to get his hands on anything that anyone could possibly want, this savvy and very persuasive trader is introduced as one of May’s contacts from the City, but their relationship seems to also have included a physical aspect – if their conversation surrounding a pregnancy testing kit is anything to go by.
Zak’s main prerogative is getting paid for his services, and he immediately makes this matter known to the Mall Rats when they attempt to use his trawler in order to escape from the virus which is being unleashed by the Technos’ Zoot AI programme. However, with the promise of pay, Zak sticks with the tribe as the virus decimates the City.
A NEW WORLD
It quickly becomes apparent that Zak is no seaman. In fact, Zak experiences severe sea sickness onboard the trawler and is forced to endure the infighting between the Mall Rats. He finds solace however in May. The two continue to grow close due to the small confines of the vessel and the extreme situation that they are all experiencing. Zak doesn’t seem like someone who would settle down, but there is no denying the connection with May.
This connection however is be cut dramatically short. Risking his life alongside Slade in an attempt to re-engage the lifeboat’s pulley system onboard the Jzhao Li, Zak is gripped by fear and is unable to jump free before the cargo vessel crashes into a remote island.
Zak is found later washed up on the beach, but he is unresponsive and in a really bad state from internal injuries. After both May and Ruby clash concerning who should get the medical supplies, the matter is eventually settled without their interference. Zak later passes away from his injuries and is given a burial on the beach.
As a final tribute to his heroism, the Priestess declares that the burial site will forever be sacred – his story told to future generations.
